BJP MLA Sangeet Singh Som calls for mahapanchayat against love jihad in UPNew Delhi: On the eve of bypolls in Uttar Pradesh, BJP MLA Sangeet Singh Som has announced a mahapanchayat to protest against love jihad, the alleged rise in eve-teasing incidents and cow slaughter. While the mahapanchayat will be held in his assembly constituency of Sardhana in Meerut district, Som has called a meeting of his supporters to decide the date.

Som was arrested last year for inciting communal violence in Muzaffarnagar last year, in which over 60 people were killed and thousands rendered homeless. He was recently given Z-plus security by the Modi government.

On September 13, bypolls will be held in 11 Assembly seats and a Lok Sabha seat. Four of those seats fall in western UP which has seen a surge in communal polarisation allegedly engineered by Hindu groups affiliated to the BJP.

Last week, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, in a first, put ‘love jihad’ on the covers of Panchjanya and Organiser, its Hindi and English mouthpieces respectively. Love jihad, a term first used by Hindu groups in Karnataka, refers to the alleged phenomenon of forced or deceitful conversion of Hindu women to Islam by Muslim men.
