Mandolin maestro Srinivas passed awayChennai: Famous Mandolin maestro and musician Uppalapu Shrinivas had been died in Chennaai on Friday morning. 45-year-old Mandolin Srinivas was was admitted to Apollo hospital for liver transplantation.

Born Feb 28, 1969, in Palakolu, Andhra Pradesh, Mr Srinivas as a mandolin player of Carnatic music discipline was a child prodigy.

As a six-year-old boy, Srinivas would play his father Satyanarayana’s mandolin. His brother U. Rajesh is also a noted mandolin player.

He was awarded the Padma Shri in 1998 and the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 2010.

Srinivas was the first person to use mandolin in Carnatic music. He modified the instrument to suit the Carnatic pitch and raga. He is said to have found the instrument in a studio where his father was employed.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed grief at the passing away of U Srinivas.
