Communal tension in Delhi’s Bawana as mahapanchayat bans Muharram processionNew Delhi: Communal tension simmering in Bawana area of Delhi as a community had demanded to bar the passage of Muharram procession in the area by Muslims. The procession will be held on 4 November.

A mahapanchayat on Sunday demanded bar on the Taziya procession took place in Bawana (Northwest Delhi) which had been attended by nearly 2,000 local including BJP MLA Ghuggan Singh and Congress councilor Devinder Poni.

It was decided in the mahapanchayat in agreement with the Muslims living in the area that the Muharram procession will not be taken out in the Jat-dominated areas.

BJP MLA Gugan Singh had take part in the mahapanchayat and said that there is a possibility of violence if the procession is carried through the colony of Non-Muslims.

Singh reportedly said, “They (Muslims) can do whatever they want in their houses but they have no right to disturb others.”

Notify that Muslims in Bawana mainly live in a JJ colony settled in the area about a decade ago and Hindu, Muslim colonies are separated by a drain. Muslims were expected to take out the procession on Muharram from the Hindu colony, whose residents opposed to it.

Although Muslims agreed not to carry out the procession in the Hindu areas, but there were also those who said that today we are asked not to take out the procession in the market, tomorrow more things may follow.

Notify that communal tensions arouse in Bawana on the occasion of Bakra Eid in October when some Hindus had alleged that Muslims were stealing their cattle for sacrifice.

Muharram is observed by Shia Muslims to mourn the martyrdom of Imam Hussein, the grandson of Prophet Mohammad in the battle of Karbala.

Police had been heavily deployed in the area after the decision of Mahapanchayat to face any communal violence in this area.
