Lucknow: Samajwadi Party leader and Uttar Pradesh`s Minority Affairs Minister Azam Khan on Thursday demanded that one of famous wonders of the world, Taj Mahal, be declared a property of the state’s Waqf Board.
Azam, who is also waqf minister of the state, had said on November 13 in a statement made the remark that the Taj Mahal should be declared a waqf property and that he should be given its charge.
Khan’s sentiments were shared by Lucknow Eidgah Imam Maulana Khalid Rasheed Firangimahli who said that Muslims should be allowed to offer prayers at the the 17th century mausoleum. Reacting to the statement made by Azam Khan, the BJP said that the UP minister is should not try to create misunderstanding among the people with his comments.
“Azam Khan is trying to create a misunderstanding by making such comments. The Taj Mahal should not be politicized,” said BJP spokesperson Shahnawaz Hussain, reported. Azam had said that as the Taj Mahal is the tomb of two Muslims it should be handed over to the Central Waqf Board.
