Mumbai: The 23-year-old Kalyan youth, who left his home to allegedly join Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIS) in Syria, has reportedly revealed during interrogation that he is a trained suicide bomber.
Areeb Majeed also said that he had also made failed attempts to carry out suicide attacks on the security forces in Syria.
Majeed, who was arrested shortly after his return to Mumbai, appeared to be “highly radicalized” and did not regret joining the ISIS. He was produced before court today which extended his National Investigation Agency (NIA) custody till December 22.
The shocking facts revealed by the Kalyan youth are contradictory to his prior claims that he was made to do menial jobs like cleaning toilets and was not recruited as one of the fighters by ISIS. During interrogation earlier , Majeed had revealed that he went to Mosul with the help of a contact on Internet.
Majeed further said that he feels disheartened as he was not one of the fighters but only cleaned toilets and worked as a mason during his stay. However, news reports suggest that Majeed is a trained suicide bomber who has made failed attempts to target security forces in strife-torn Syria.
He was believed to have been killed during fighting after he left his home over six months ago to join IS.
Majeed had joined the ISIS with three other youths from Kalyan – Shaheen Tanki, Fahad Shaikh and Aman Tandel – after they left India to visit holy places in the West Asia, but disappeared shortly after.
