New Delhi: In what could be seen as a major boost for the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Jama Masjid’s former Shahi Imam, Syed Ahmed Bukhari appealed to Muslims to support AAP in the Delhi assembly elections, scheduled for Saturday.
Bukhari told news agency ANI that it was important to ‘form a secular government’ in Delhi.
In the 2014 general elections, Bukhari had endorsed his support for the Congress party, which however suffered a humiliating defeat at the hands of BJP.
Bukhari’s statement comes just a day after Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee exhorted voters in Delhi to back the Aam Aadmi Party in the elections. AAP, led by Arvind Kejriwal, is pitched against the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Congress. The results of the elections will be out on February 10.
