New Delhi: Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) bus drivers went on strike today to protest against the death of a 42-year-old bus driver in an alleged road rage incident leaving thousands of commuters stranded in the national capital.
The angry DTC employees also rejected the state government compensation of Rs five lakhs for the victim’s family and demanded a compensation of Rs one crore instead. DTC drivers and conductors had staged a protest outside Rohini bus depot yesterday demanding better security for them.
Huge rush was seen on Delhi roads with stranded commuters looking for alternatives and travelling by Delhi Metro or private auto-rickshaws.The accused Vijay, a resident of Mundka area, was arrested by police on Sunday night.
The incident took place when Vijay and his mother, who was riding pillion, fell on the ground after being hit by the bus following which he entered into an argument with the bus driver.
The argument escalated with Vijay beating up Ashok, who was left unconscious. He was later rushed to the hospital where doctors declared him brought dead.
None of the passengers of the bus came forward to help the driver, according to police.Ashok was driving a low-floor, non-AC bus of Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) which was going from Karampura to Bahadurgarh.
The post mortem report of the victim is expected today.
