The BJP has emerged victorious in the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) council elections as it won in 100 wards of the civic body. The Congress managed to win 76 council seats, becoming the second major party, whereas JD-S won in only 14 wards. Out of the remaining eight wards, four were won by independent candidates and four by candidates of other parties.
The BJP, which has crossed the half-way mark, is now eligible to elect the mayor and deputy mayor from the party. The process to elect the the mayor, deputy mayor and chairpersons of 12 standing committees has to be completed in the first meeting of the council.
Voting for the BBMP council poll was held on Saturday in 197 of the 198 wards. Although 7.4 million (73,88,526) voters had registered to exercise their franchise, only 49% of them had turned out.
The election was not held in the Hongasandra ward (number 189) as a BJP candidate was declared elected unanimously on 13 August after the poll panel rejected the nomination of Congress candidate K Maheshwari for submitting a false caste certificate.
In order to ensure win the this year’s BBMP council elections, BJP had launched Union Ministers Venkaiah Naidu, Sadananda Gowda, Ananth Kumar and former Chief Minister Yeddyurappa for the campaigns.
