#Mumbai: In a major relief for Bollywood Dabang super star actor Salman Khan in the 2002 hit-and-run case, the Bombay High Court on Thursday acquitted him of all charges. The court in its verdict said the Bollywood star “cannot be convicted” on the basis of the evidence produced by the prosecution in the case.
“On basis of evidences produced by the prosecution, the appellant cannot be convicted, no matter how differently the common man thinks,” the court said on Thursday.
Justice AR Joshi, who was making his observations as the open-court dictation of his verdict entered the last lap, said the “prosecution failed to establish the charges (against Salman) on all counts”.
Earlier on Wednesday, the court had ruled that there was no evidence to prove that Salman was drunk or driving the ill-fated Toyota Land Cruiser on September 28, 2002 when it met with an accident and mowed down one pavement dweller and injured four others.
The HC verdict on Khan’s sentence and conviction for culpable homicide not amounting to murder under section 304-II of Indian Penal Code for the death of one person, when his vehicle rammed into a Bandra bakery and laundry, was keenly awaited, not just by the star but also his family.
