A jet which can fly at 5,500km per hour could be in development – making the duration of an Atlantic crossing about an hour.
The patent for a supersonic jet has been filed by Airbus, the company seeking to manufacture a plane with a rocket engine which would travel at 4.5 times the speed of sound.
The plane is named in Airbus’ patented documents as an “ultra-rapid air vehicle and related method of aerial locomotion”.
In the patent, Airbus describes the craft as “an air vehicle including a fuselage, a gothic delta wing distributed on either side of the fuselage, and a system of motors able to propel the air vehicle.”
Airbus also believes the jet would take just three hours to fly from Paris to San Francisco or Tokyo to Los #Angeles, reports Business Insider.
The patent says that the air vehicle will be “propelled by a system of rockets formed of turbojets and a rocket motor which can be made streamlined to reduce the drag of the base during the cruise phase”.
