United Kingdom #PrinceHarry described his feelings of ‘guilt’ as he left  #Afghan battlefields#Toronto : Prince Harry described his feelings of guilt at leaving soldiers behind in Afghanistan as he urged Canadians yesterday to support his Invictus Games in Toronto.

The Prince launched the Paralympic-style event for injured servicemen and women in London two years ago. He went to Canada’s largest city to drum up support for the third Invictus Games next year.

Prince Harry, 31, will watch the second games, contested by 500 military personnel and veterans from 15 countries, in Orlando, Florida, fromnext Sunday.

He called on Canadians to make the 2017 event in Toronto even bigger.

Next year is their country’s 150th anniversary – and marks the centenary of the First World War battle at Vimy Ridge, a bloody victory that became a symbol of Canadian pride and sacrifice.


He said: “2017 is your chance to salute those who serve your country, who put themselves in harm’s way so you don’t have to.

“On home soil, during this most auspicious of years as Canada celebrates its 150th anniversary and remembers the events and sacrifices at Vimy Ridge, you will have the chance to cheer on the custodians of the Invictus spirit.

The prince, a former Army officer, spoke of the decision to recall him from his first tour in Afghanistan in 2008 after his presence as a forward air controller leaked out.

It played a huge part in his decision to create the games.

“I could no longer stay with my soldiers, as it would have put them at greater risk,” he explained.

“It was a decision over which I had no control. But the guilt of having to leave my guys behind was something I had to swallow.”

He told how seeing three seriously wounded British troops in induced comas and the coffin of a Danish soldier on his plane home made him think about sacrifice.
