#Mumbai : #Kherwadi is one of Mumbai’s many slums, which are home to about half of the city’s 12 million inhabitants. It lies between the railway station of Bandra–one of the city’s richest suburbs, peppered with the construction sites of pricey high rises–and the Western Express Way.
The first people moved into illegal encroachments here in the 1970s, and over the years the number of dwellers – most of them Muslim – has skyrocketed to over 100,000. Population growth in Kherwadi has been particularly fast, and the construction boom more intense than elsewhere.
But the story is the same in most of Mumbai’s slums. With limited space, the only way to accommodate the new generations — and the new arrivals — is up.
