NEW DELHI: Congress vice-president Rahul Gandhi once again targeted Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the issue of demonetisation and allegations of corruption against him on Wednesday.
“On November 8, PM Modi said that he’s performing a ‘yagya’ against black money and corruption. However, this ‘yagya’ was for the sake of 1% super-rich of this country. It is the common people who have been sacrificed in Modiji’s ‘yagya’,” Rahul said.
Addressing party workers at the 132nd foundation day of Indian National Congress, Rahul urged the Prime Minister to come clean on the allegations that he received kickbacks from corporate houses while he was chief minister of Gujarat.
“Modiji said demonetisation is against corruption. But we (Congress) showed that Modiji himself is facing corruption charges. The Income Tax recovered several documents from Sahara Group. The PM should answer the questions which public is demanding to know,” the Congress leader said.
The Gandhi scion challenged PM Modi to reveal the actual amount of black money recovered since the implementation of the ban on Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 currency notes.
“Modiji should reveal how much black money has been recovered post November 8. How much economic loss has the nation suffered? And how many people lost their lives?” he demanded.
Rahul then attacked the government for putting a limit on withdrawal of money from banks.
“On what basis has the PM imposed this limit on the money we can withdraw? The Rs 24,000 limit should be removed immediately to give people back their financial independence,” the Congress VP said.
He went on to say that farmers, who have been hit the hardest by demonetisation, should have their loans waived off.
Rahul also added that Congress has always helped the farmers, labourers, small shopkeepers and the economically weak sections of society. He emphasised that it is imperative for party workers to continue doing so, given how the currency ban has hit these sections the hardest.
“What is the Congress? It means listening to you, understanding others. It made us understand the meaning of freedom and working for others. Congress will stand with people and defeat the ideology of Narendra Modi and RSS that spreads ‘anger’ and ‘hate’,” Rahul said.
