Lucknow : Three men on motorcycles threw acid on a 20-year-old near Bhatvalia crossing in Deoria, Uttar Pradesh police said on Monday.
“The girl, a resident of Amava village, came to an institute to enquire about a computer course. As she was returning, three persons riding on two motorcycles threw acid on her,” police said.
that the incident took place in front of the residence of the Superintendent of Police (SP). The policemen stationed at the SP Rajiv Mehrotra’s house took the woman to a hospital.
The girl suffered 25 percent burn injuries and was rushed to the district hospital. The men have been taken into custody, police said, adding that the SP met the girl personally.
The Hindustan Times report also quoted Mehrotra as saying, “The attackers were the relatives of the girl and one of them was possibly her uncle. A land dispute between the girl’s family and the accused led to the attack.”
This is just the latest in a series of attacks on women which have taken place across the country.
On 25 July, a 32-year-old married woman was allegedly raped by two men at her residence in Kalwa township in Thane. After the incident, the accused allegedly threw acid at the woman before fleeing.
Another Lucknow woman was attacked with acid for the fourth time. The incident took place right outside her house.
The police later said there was no evidence to suggest outsider involvement. Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath suggested that something was amiss, saying a conspiracy may have been hatched to defame his government.
