Chennai: Parents of schoolchildren in the state need no longer worry about the whereabouts of their wards after they leave home. School education minister K A Sengottaiyan on Wednesday announced that smart cardswith embedded SIM cards will in the near future be issued to students across the state. The cards, he added, would also ensure attendance at school.
The smart cards would help parents collect other pertinent information of each student, including education related details and academic records. The minister said a question bank with 54,000 questions was being prepared and this would aid students in the state prepare for competitive examinations. As many as 412 locations have been identified as centres for training students for three hour sessions on weekends and holidays for these competitive exams. Also, all district libraries will house coaching centre for various Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) exams.
“All these measures will be set in motion in a month’s time,” the minister told reporters on the sidelines of a state-level conference involving education officers.
Besides, 6,029 schools will be provided with computers at a cost of 462 crore and smart classrooms will be set up across 3,000 schools, said Sengottaiyan.
