Hyderabad: Telugu language will be a compulsory subject for Classes 1 to 12 in all Telengana educational institutions, Chief Minister of Telangana, K Chandrashekar Rao said on Tuesday.
The Chief Minister further said that schools failing make Telugu mandatory will be de-recognised and not allowed to be function in the state.
Rao also asked all public and private establishments and institutions in Telangana to display organisations’ names in Telugu on their signboards.
The move comes amid Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Odisha trying to safeguard their regional language and culture.
The Chief Minister also has asked the Sahitya Academy to prepare syllabus for the Telugu subject to be taught to primary, secondary and higher and intermediate classes, while for those opting for Urdu, it should be offered as an optional subject, it said.
“The CM has instructed all the educational institutions in the state, both private and public, to teach Telugu as a compulsory subject from Class I to XII. He has made it clear that it is only the educational institutions that are teaching Telugu, as a compulsory subject will be given recognition and permissions to function,” read a release from CM’s Office.
The Telangana government is set to conduct a five-day World Telugu Conference from December 15 to 19.
