Chennai: Gangster Sridhar Dhanapalan, popularly known as the Dawood Ibrahim of the south, allegedly committed suicide by consuming cyanide in Cambodia on Thursday. The 44-year-old allegedly had issues with the family. He was taken to a hospital in Cambodia where he died at around 6.30 pm.
While the Tamil Nadu Police, which has been pursuing him in connection with a number of cases, has refrained from commenting on the news, there has been tension near Elliappan Street in Kancheepuram where his home is located.
There are 43 cases including seven murders against Sridhar. He fled the country in 2013 and despite various efforts, police has been unsuccessful in tracing him. He is referred to as “Dawood Ibrahim of the South” by the state police.
He was alone in Cambodia for several months, his daughters and wife stay in Kancheepuram and his son studies in London.
