NEWDELHI: A powerful earthquake measuring 6.9 on the Richter scale jolted Arunachal Pradesh early on Saturday, but there was no immediate report of casualty.
The tremor occurred around 4 am with its epicenter locating in Tibet’s Nyingchi Prefecture, which is close to Arunachal.
The strong quake was followed by a magnitude 5 tremor around the same place in Tibet.
The tremors caused a power failure and damaged buildings in the prefecture.
The first quake had struck at a depth of about 10 km, while the second struck at a depth of about 6 km, China’s state-run Xinhua news agency reported.
Local authorities were on high alert for emergency rescue and relief operations.
On Tuesday, a 7.3-magnitude quake had killed at least 530 people and injured more than 8000 others in Iran, which was the deadliest in more than a decade.
At least 14 provinces in the country were affected by the quake which destroyed two whole villages and damaged 30,000 houses.
