New Delhi: It’s raining good news for Delhiites in 2018 as far as urban public transport is concerned. In a New Year gift for the people living in the national capital, the Delhi Metro has announced that it will throw open the 9.7-km Lajpat Nagar-Mayur Vihar Pocket-1 corridor of the Pink Line on December 31.
Public will be able to use the corridor on the same day, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) said. There are five stations on the section – of these, three are underground and two are elevated.
The Commissioner of Metro Railway Safety (CMRS) did a safety inspection of the corridor on Monday earlier this week and granted necessary approvals for the launch of passenger operations.
Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) Hardeep Singh Puri and Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia will do the inauguration of the corridor, a DMRC official said.
“This extension of the Delhi Metro’s Pink Line will be formally flagged off by Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) Hardeep Singh Puri and Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia on December 31 at 11 am from Metro Bhawan. Passenger services will commence on this section on the same day from 4 pm onwards,” the official said.
The five stations on the new section are Lajpat Nagar (existing), Vinobapuri, Ashram, Hazrat Nizamuddin, Mayur Vihar Phase-1 and Mayur Vihar Pocket-1. Mayur Vihar Phase-1 and Mayur Vihar Pocket-1 are elevated stations.
The Lajpat Nagar-Mayur Vihar Pocket-1 corridor is a part of the 59-km-long Pink Line, which runs from Majlis Park to Shiv Vihar and vice versa. The Pink Line comes under Phase-III of the DMRC network.
The Pink Line is already operational from Majlis Park to Lajpat Nagar and from Trilokpuri to Shiv Vihar. After the new corridor’s launch, the only stretch remaining on the Pink Line will be the connection between Mayur Vihar Pocket-1 and Trilokpuri stations, where work started late due to land acquisition issues.
“Mark your calendars! Pink Line extension from Lajpat Nagar to Mayur Vihar Pocket-1 will begin operations from 4 pm on 31st December 2018. The section will connect Lajpat Nagar and Mayur Vihar Pocket-1 through Vinoba Puri, Ashram, Hazrat Nizamuddin and Mayur Vihar-1,” the Delhi Metro tweeted.
After launching the first line way back in December 2002, the Delhi Metro has come a long way and its network now spans 317 kms having 231 stations.
