Hyderabad : Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister YS Jagan Mogan Reddy is likely to dissolve his cabinet and bring in new ministers in a major “correction” ahead of the 2024 state election.
The big changes are expected at a cabinet meeting at 3 pm today, for which ministers are reportedly being asked to come with resignation letters.
Officially, there is a 22-point agenda for the meeting.
Jagan Reddy met with Governor Biswabhusan Harichandan last evening and reportedly informed him that he will overhaul his cabinet and handed him a list of 19 ministers set to be dropped. He will submit a list of new ministers to the Governor by Saturday, say sources.
A new cabinet is likely to be sworn in on Monday.
Only one or two ministers from the “outgoing” team are likely to be retained, sources say. The representation of castes and all 26 Andhra districts will be most critical in the revamp.Ads by
“Ministers being dropped does not mean poor performance,” a minister said.
Sources say a key message behind the planned do-over is that Jagan Reddy is the undisputed leader of the ruling YSR Congress and no one in the party can question his decisions.
Like in the old cabinet, there will be five Deputy Chief Ministers. Currently, the five Deputy Chief Ministers represent the Scheduled Caste, Scheduled Tribe, Backward Caste, minority and Kapu communities.
In 2019, soon after his massive victory in the Andhra Pradesh election, Jagan Reddy had said he would pick a new team mid-term as part of his strategy for 2024.
Sources say a revamp expected in December had to be put off because of Covid. Last month, Jagan Reddy said he would reorganise his cabinet after the Telugu New Year, Ugadi, on April 2.
