Maharashtra: Devvrat Mahesh Rekhe, a 19-year-old from Maharashtra, has created history by memorising and reciting 2,000 sacred verses from the Shukla Yajurveda. He performed this in a rare Vedic style known as ‘Dandkarma Parayanam,’ completing a spiritual discipline considered one of the most challenging in Hindu tradition.
Rekhe carried out this extraordinary feat at Sangveda Vidyalaya near Ramghat in Varanasi, performing the recitation continuously for 50 days without any interruption. His accomplishment has drawn praise from Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath.
The Dandkarma Parayanam is one of the eight vikrutis in the Vedas. Scholars say that due to its complex sound patterns, this style of recitation has been performed only three times in recorded history.
Years of Dedication
Speaking to NDTV, Devvrat shared that he began learning the Vedas at a very young age. “We have dedicated nearly 12 years to this practice,” he said. “The Dandkarma text itself takes around 1.5 years to complete. Everyone involved worked hard, whether it was 15 hours or 18 hours.”
His guru, Nilesh Kedar, praised him, calling this achievement a revival of a nearly lost tradition. He added that Devvrat drew inspiration from his late mother, whose wish was that he complete this recitation in Kashi and offer it to Bhagwan Vishwanath.
Felicitation
In recognition of his achievement, Rekhe was presented with a golden bracelet worth Rs 5 lakh and Rs 1,11,116, along with blessings from the Jagadguru Shankaracharyas of Sringeri Sharada Peetham. A grand procession in Varanasi included over 500 Vedic students, musicians, and devotees to celebrate the occasion.
UP CM Yogi Adityanath praised Devvrat on X, “…Shri Devvrat Mahesh Rekhe has achieved an extraordinary feat by memorizing 2,000 Vedic mantras through his unique practice and remarkable memory—a milestone that serves as a beacon of inspiration for the entire spiritual world…”
“It is a matter of special pride that this Vedic ritual was performed on the sacred land of divine Kashi. Heartfelt felicitations to his family, teachers, saints, and all institutions whose support made this spiritual accomplishment possible… Devvrat Ji, may this achievement become a shining beacon of inspiration for generations to come…,” CM Yogi wrote on X.
PM Modi Praises Young Scholar
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also congratulated the young scholar on X, calling his achievement truly heartening.
“…His success will serve as an inspiration for future generations… As a Member of Parliament from Kashi, I feel proud that this extraordinary practice was performed on this sacred land.
