Another building collapse in Mumbai, 10 died

Mumbai: A three-story building collapsed early Friday in India’s financial capital amid monsoon rains, killing at least 10 people, including five children, and injuring nine others. This is the second building collapse in Mumbai since April.

Police commissioner of Thane district K.P. Raghuvanshi said that authorities rescued 20 people from the debris of the building by using sensors. The 20-year-old building came crashing down while most residents were asleep, he said. The incident occurred around 2 a.m. when the 35-year-old Smriti building located in Thane, some 40 km from Mumbai, came crashing down, catching the sleeping occupants unaware.

According to some reports, the building had been served an eviction notice some time ago by the civic authorities but the occupants failed to pay any heed.

Raghuvanshi said that nine people were hospitalized, but their injuries were not life threatening.
