Bihar: Woman Officer Attacked By Sand Mining Goons During Inspection; 44 Held

NewDelhi/Bihar: Sand mafia goons on Monday attacked a Mines Department team and brutally thrashed a female mining inspector on the banks of the Sone river in Bihar’s Patna district, according to police. The mining team discovered that the sand mafia was overloading trucks near Parev village, so a team from the Mines Department and Bihta police went there to inspect. However, the team was attacked by sand mafias and truck drivers. The police and Mines Department fled when they saw the assailants outnumbered them, but the woman official was not so fortunate and collapsed.

The attackers beat her with batons and pelted her with stones. Soon after, a large number of police officers led by SP, City, West arrived on the scene and chased the mafia members away. According to the Patna police official spokesperson, 44 people have been arrested in connection with the attack.

“The incident took place when a team had gone for inspection and searches as part of its drive to check illegal mining in Bihta area. When they reached near Koilwar Bridge, the officials were attacked by anti-social elements. As the accused started throwing stones at them, Amya Kumari fell down and suffered injuries,” the Patna district administration said in a statement.

Amya Kumari is the woman inspector. The other two officials – district mining officer Kumar Gaurav and mining inspector Sayeed Farhin were also injured, the statement said. The conditions of all three injured are reported to be stable.

“The police are investigating the matter and more arrests are likely to be made. The police will soon nab the mastermind behind this incident, news agency PTI quoted SSP Patna as saying.

Reacting to the incident, RJD leader Shivanand Tiwari said that his government has taken cognizance of the incident. He told news agency ANI that Chief Minister Nitish Kumar has instructed the concerned officials to identify the people seen in the viral video and take appropriate action against the culprits.
