Sonia Gandhi and Sushil Shinde visited Mahabodhi Temple on Wednesday

Patna: A day after the visit of BJP president Rajnath Singh and other senior BJP leaders, now UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi and Union Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde arrived at Mahabodhi temple, blast site of Bodh Gaya on Wednesday. This is the first visit by any Union Minister to the revered Mahabodhi Temple – the holy Buddhist shrine – which was targeted by a series of explosions on Sunday.

According to reports, Shinde was accompanied by top officials of his ministry, also met officials of investigating agencies during his visit to Bodh Gaya.

Official said both Shinde and Sonia will be given the first-hand information about the serial bomb explosions and the progress made so far by the agencies probing the case.

At early morning of Sunday, a series of ten synchronized blasts took place in the different parts of the temple. Two monks were injured in the incident. Forensic experts and local investigators later found three unexploded bombs from the blasts sites, one even placed 20 feet high on a Buddha statue.
The NIA is now officially probing this case. They have detained three men and a woman who are questioned for their suspicious movement. Report says, the four had checked in a hotel very close to Mahabodhi temple at 4 am and had checked out at 6:30 am on Sunday. However blasts took place at around 5:30 am on Sunday. All four were then allowed to go home after preliminary investigation.

Mahabodhi temple is a UNESCO world heritage site where Buddha attained enlightenment around 2,500 years ago.
