FIR filed against Abhishek Banerjee over ‘inflammatory speeches’; Dilip Ghosh launches sharp attack

WestBengal: Trouble seems to be mounting for former West Bengal Chief Minister and TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee’s nephew and TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee, as an FIR has been registered against him for allegedly making inflammatory statements ahead of the elections. The FIR was registered on May 15 and, according to the complainant Rajib Sarkar, Abhishek Banerjee, who is fondly called “Bhaipo” by TMC supporters, delivered provocative, threatening, and inflammatory speeches. The complainant alleged that the speeches incited violence, promoted enmity, and disturbed public tranquillity during different political rallies and election campaigns for the 2026 West Bengal Legislative Assembly elections.

The FIR was lodged at the Bidhannagar North Cyber Crime Police Station over alleged inflammatory statements made ahead of the elections. The complaint also mentioned remarks regarding the playing of DJs and statements directed against Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

“The brief facts of the case are that on 15.05.2026, a written complaint was received from Shri Rajib Sarkar, son of Late Mrinal Kanti Sarkar, residing at Arunila Apartment, FA 6/2 Deshbandhu Nagar, Baguiati, Kolkata-700059. In the complaint, he alleged that Shri Abhishek Banerjee, MP from the Diamond Harbour constituency, delivered provocative, threatening, and inflammatory speeches during different political rallies and election campaigns for the West Bengal Legislative Assembly Election 2026. The speeches allegedly incited violence, promoted enmity, and disturbed public tranquillity,” the FIR stated.

Meanwhile, complainant Rajib Sarkar also alleged that the remarks were posted through Abhishek Banerjee’s official Facebook page, ‘Abhishek Banerjee Official’, and were also circulated on different social media platforms.

The complaint also mentioned speeches delivered by Banerjee at political rallies in Maheshtala, Arambagh, Haringhata, and Nandigram during March and April. According to the FIR, he allegedly used aggressive language against opposition workers, which could disturb public peace and create political tension.

Following the complaint, police registered a case under Sections 192, 196, 351(2), and 353(1)(C) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The case also includes Sections 123(2) and 125 of the Representation of the People Act, 1951.

Dilip Ghosh attacks Mamata Banerjee and TMC after FIR against Abhishek Banerjee

Following the FIR against TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee, West Bengal Minister Dilip Ghosh did not hold back and launched a scathing attack on West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Abhishek Banerjee. He alleged that the TMC leadership had acted tyrannically during its rule and claimed that people were too afraid to file complaints earlier. However, he said that people are now coming forward to complain.

While speaking to the media in Kolkata, he said, “Mamata Banerjee, Abhishek Banerjee and their leaders have acted tyrannically. People did not complain at that time because of fear. However, they are now ready to complain, and the police are ready to act on it, so justice will be served.”
