Fifteen Indian tourists were killed after a tourist speedboat capsized near Phu Quoc Island in Vietnam. Authorities said that 21 people have been rescued so far. Search and rescue teams continued their operation as officials worked to confirm the identities of the victims and determine the cause of the accident.
Boat was carrying Indian tourists on island-hopping tour
The speedboat, identified as AG-26751, was operated by Ocean Pearl Island Co. It was carrying 32 Indian tourists and four Vietnamese crew members. The vessel had departed from Hon May Rut Ngoai for an island-hopping tour when it overturned near Phu Quoc Island.
The incident took place around 1 PM when the speedboat unexpectedly malfunctioned and capsized, Local news website VnExpress shared this update citing information from the Phu Quoc Special Economic Zone authorities.
The local guard station sent out two rescue boats with 35 soldiers and officers to look for survivors. They are working closely with the navy and the coast guard to help save lives, according to news agency IANS.
The accident happened near May Rut Ngoai Island. This island is very famous for coral reef diving. Tourists usually take a 20 to 40-minute boat ride to get there from the main island.
Authorities have launched an investigation to find out what caused the tragedy. Officials have not yet announced the exact reason behind the accident.
Indian Embassy issues emergency assistance
The Indian Embassy in Vietnam confirmed that it is closely monitoring the situation.
“In a tragic incident, a boat carrying several Indian tourists has capsized near Phu Quoc Island in Vietnam a few hours ago.”
The embassy added, “Exact details of the incident are being ascertained as search and rescue operations by local authorities are ongoing.”
To assist affected families, the Indian Embassy said a control room has been set up at the Consulate General of India in Ho Chi Minh City.
