JABALPUR: Madhya Pradesh police are indulging in a brutal crackdown to curb spiralling crime just months before the assembly polls. And horror tales are emerging from police’s torture chambers in the state.
While a 24-year-old engineer from Satna district is battling for life in hospital after his intestines were allegedly ruptured by violent policemen, another man attempted suicide late on Tuesday inside a police station in full public view in Chhindwara to protest harassment.
The engineer, Mayur Singh, was taken to Sanjay Gandhi Hospital, Rewa, after his condition deteriorated in prison on Friday. Singh, who has no criminal history, was picked up on robbery charges and tortured in the lock-up.
Doctors at Sanjay Gandhi Hospital confirmed on Wednesday that Mayur’s rectum and intestines were ruptured and a corrective surgery had been performed on him. His family members claimed “police stripped Mayur and then rammed a baton inside his rectum after pouring petrol mixed with chilli powder”.
Mayur could barely walk or pass urine after the torture. When he began to sink, prison authorities shifted him to Satna district hospital. Fearing he would die, harried doctors there referred him to the hospital in Rewa, 65 km from Manjhgawa police station, Satna, where the torture took place.
Mayur’s mother, Mahima Singh, is in a state of shock and is camping at the hospital.
The surgeon who operated upon Mayur, Dr SS Gaharwar, confirmed the anal torture. He said infection was spreading in the intestines due to the grievous injury. “This is a medico-legal case and I cannot disclose more details,” he said.
CMO Dr SK Pathak and Sanjay Gandhi Hospital dean S S Kushwaha also confirmed that Mayur had suffered intestinal injury and was critical. “Mayur has suffered a rupture in the rectum and intestines,” Dr Kushwaha said. “We’ve done a corrective surgery.”
But senior police officials in Madhya Pradesh ruled out torture and insisted the young engineer went under the knife due to a stomach infection.
“Mayur was arrested on August 6 and produced in court the next day,” IG, Rewa, R K Gupta, told TOI on Wednesday. “The torture story is baseless. The man developed acidity and stomach infection, which required surgical intervention. The family has cooked up the horror tale.”
But the top cop could not clarify how stomach acidity could lead to a ruptured rectum.
“Police picked up Mayur on August 5,” said Robin Singh, Mayur’s brother. “They questioned his links with a local criminal. He was untraceable for the next 24 hours.” The day after, the family went to the prison to see Mayur after reading reports in local newspapers about the arrest of three men on charges of plotting a robbery. “We found him in a terrible shape,” said Robin. “He could barely walk and was unable to urinate or defecate.”
Another youth, Vikas Mahare, was in a critical condition at a government hospital in Chindwara on Wednesday after he swallowed pesticide on the police station campus. Summoned to the police station and thrashed a week ago for allegedly running a gambling racket, Mahare tried to commit suicide after being called for further interrogation.
