“Parliament is a forum where different viewpoints are put forward, where questions are being asked to the government, where government is made accountable and nobody is spared, and one shouldn’t expect otherwise,” PM #NarendraModi said, replying to the discussion in the Lok Sabha, also, “And in doing so, it would be great if we uphold parliamentary traditions” to let the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha function “peacefully and responsibly”.
“It is not me saying this… These are the words of former prime minister Rajiv Gandhi,” PM Modi told the Lok Sabha, a full house today. Congress president Sonia Gandi and her son and deputy Rahul Gandhi were present during the PM’s speech.
He quoted Rajiv Gandhi twice on the need for decorum in Parliament and also his grandfather and India’s first prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru as he urged the opposition to help the government pass crucial legislations, listing the bills which are pending, including the Goods and Services Tax bill.
He quoted Indira Gandhi, Pandit Nehru’s daughter, in an attack on the Congress when he said, “Why do we want to portray the image of India as if we have a begging bowl in our hands. When we ourselves will say this, other will say the same thing more loudly and strongly.”
PM Modi, in his speech made a strong rebuttal of an attack on him yesterday by Rahul Gandhi during the debate in the Lok Sabha. Rahul Gandhi is the son of Rajiv Gandhi and the grandson of Indira Gandhi.
“If the house maintains decorum, we will be able to put our point of view in a better manner,” the PM said. He also referred to Left leader Somnath Chatterjee who was Lok Sabha speaker during the first UPA government from 2004 to 2009.
“As far as disruptions are concerned, our former speaker and some members here whose guide and philosopher Somnath Chatterjee said that to disrupt is totally counter-productive,” PM Modi said, emphasising that the nation suffers if parliament does not function properly and that disruptions hit the opposition more than the government, since its lawmakers are unable to raise issues.
“The House is a place where debates are to take place. When parliament sessions are not functional, the nation suffers and more than that the MPs suffer because they can’t discuss issues,” said PM #NarendraModi .
