New Delhi: A 15-year-old domestic help was beaten and brutalized for over a year at an upscale south Delhi home from where she was rescued on Monday night after a tip-off from neighbors. The employer, a 50-year-old woman who lives with her mother and dogs, was arrested this morning.
The young girl was found naked, with stab wounds and bite marks all over her body and a deep gash on her forehead. Doctors say she also has a fracture on one side of her skull. It is a horrible and barbaric act. We will put this case in a fast track court and the government will bear the cost of her treatment at a private hospital,” said Delhi Women and Child Development Minister Kiran Walia. The employer Vandana Dhir, who works at a private company at Noida, has been charged with assault and illegal confinement.
The teenager’s wounds horrified everyone in the rescue team, including police officers, who showed up at the Vasant Kunj flat last evening. The team had to wait for three hours for Vandana Dhir, who finally came with a lawyer. Her 85-year-old mother had refused to open the door and tried her best to stop the team from entering. The police said neighbors had complained about screams from the flat, but had been afraid to do anything. The girl said she was brought to Delhi from Jharkhand by her aunt a year ago and since then; she had suffered daily beatings with a stick or a broom, and had been regularly punched and kicked. Her employers would also stab her with a knife and refused to let her go home, the teen said. The incident highlights the UN Sections of bonded labour have also been included in the First Information Report. The police waited till daybreak to arrest the employer as the law forbids the arrest of women at night and without woman constables present.
