NEW DELHI: Amid reports that the ruling Samajwadi Party and Congress were negotiating to contest the 2017 UP assembly elections as allies, BSP chief Mayawati insinuated that the BJP would be the one calling the shots on a potential alliance.
“The SP and Congress have been attempting to forge an alliance but that will materialise only when the BJP gives the green signal for it. And the BJP will give the green signal only when it is sure that such an alliance will actually benefit them,” Mayawati alleged.
The BSP supremo once again blasted Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the issue of demonetisation, saying the move will prove to be the BJP’s downfall in the upcoming Uttar Pradesh elections.
“To divert the public attention from the promises made in the Lok Sabha polls, Modi hastily implemented demonetisation, without any proper preparation. This has now become a political albatross around the PM’s neck,” Mayawati told the media at a press conference.
Dismissing the government’s claims that demonetisation was aimed to flush out black money hoarders and the corrupt, Mayawati alleged that the decision was one of pure self-interest. She said that the weaker sections of the economy had yet to recover from the November 8 move that created an acute shortage of cash in the country.
“Over 90 per cent of the poor, farmers, labourers and other working classes are yet to overcome from the strong effects of the demonetisation despite the 50 days’ time sought by Modi nearing an end,” the BSP leader said.
She further criticized the BJP-led Union government for failing to fulfill most of the promises they’d made during 2014 Lok Sabha elections and said the
disillusioned and frustrated public will “hand them (BJP) the punishment they deserve” in the UP polls.
