Bengaluru: Former Chief Minister of Karnataka, N Dharam Singh (80), passed away following a heart attack here in a private hospital on Thursday morning. He was the 17th chief minister of the State and was in power from May 2004 to February 2006, during the Congress party’s coalition with the JD(S).
He was a seasoned politician and known for his gentle demeanour, who knew each voter by name in his constituency Jewargi, which he nurtured from 1978 to 2008.
Though he belonged to small community, he had the won the loyalty of voters going beyond caste affiliations.
When the 2004 elections thew up a hung assembly, the Congress and the JD(S) formed a coalition government and he emerged as the unanimous choice of both the parties. However, the coalition fell after H D Kumaraswamy broke the coalition.
