Ahmedabad: In yet another blow to the Congress in Gujarat, two of its MLAs resigned on Friday.
Two Congress MLAs Mansingh Chouhan and Chhanabhai Chaudhary today submitted their resignation letters to the Gujarat Assembly Speaker Ramanlal Vora.
Governor Vora confirmed that he had received the two resignation letters from the Congress leaders.
On Friday, three MLAs from the grand old party considered close to Shankarsinh Vaghela on Thursday quit and joined the BJP, which quickly declared one of them its candidate for next month’s Rajya Sabha polls against Congress veteran Ahmed Patel.
Chief Whip Balwantsinh Rajput, MLA from Siddhpur who is rebel leader Shankersinh Vaghela’s relative, was named by the BJP for the third Rajya Sabha seat for which Patel has filed his nomination. BJP president Amit Shah and Union Minister Smriti Irani are the other two party candidates.
The other two MLAs are Tejashree Patel from Viramgam and Vijapur legislator PI Patel.
The latest setback for the Congress comes almost a week after Vaghela left the party and also resigned as the Leader of Opposition. However, he continues to be an MLA.
