NewDelhi: The Delhi high court stepped in to give relief to residents of Flagstaff Road in Civil Lines, north Delhi, by ordering that no protests will be allowed on the street any more. The area, which rose to prominence after chief minister Arvind Kejriwal moved there, has become a perpetual hub of protests and dharnas because of which the CMs neighbours had to approach the court for relief.
Advocate Sanjay K Chadha, who appeared on behalf of the residents, said that the court has given directions to Delhi Police to remove people from the road in pursuance of a Supreme Court judgment. Not only have protesters been asked to move from there but they have also been told to go to designated spots for protests, like Jantar Mantar. We were also told to approach the court for relief if its orders were not followed, said Chadha.
The entry to Flagstaff Road has been barricaded for several months now and protesters demonstrating over various issues have been prevented from entering the road. With no access to the CM’s house, protesters usually camp the barricades for multiple days. For residents of this small stretch, entry and exit has become a roblem, especially if a protest takes on a violent note.
The protests are a massive nuisance for residents and both the police and the Delhi government have corroborated their statements. Children were forced to remain in their school vans for two hours before entering their homes as the entrances were blocked by protesters. On some occasions, there had been stone pelting as well. We had filed the petition on Tuesday and the matter was disposed of on the same day, said Chadha.
Meanwhile, residents had also approached PWD, which had issued orders to remove protesters from entering Flagstaff Road. The most recent protest at at the spot was by anganwadi workers.
