Lucknow: As the Narendra Modi government prepares to bring a bill which seeks to criminalise the practice of instant triple talaq, a fresh case of instant divorce was reported from Rampur’s Azimnagar in the Uttar Pradesh.
According to ANI, a young Muslim woman in Rampur’s Azimnagar was given triple talaq by her husband because she woke up late in the morning.
The woman was also mercilessly beaten up by her husband, who, in a fit of rage, gave her instant divorce by pronouncing the word ‘talaq’ thrice.
The victim has been identified as Gul Afshan, a resident of Rampur’s Azimnagar in Uttar Pradesh.
The fresh incident has come at a time when the Narendra Modi government is gearing up to table a bill which seeks to criminalise the practice of triple talaq in the Parliament next week.
This was announced by Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Ananth Kumar.
The bill was cleared by the Union Cabinet last week.
The Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill 2017 criminalises instant triple talaq and imposes a prison term of up to three years on husbands who violate the law.
It also makes a provision for alimony for the woman on whom instant triple talaq has been pronounced and grants her the custody of her children.
In a historic judgement on August 22, a five-judge bench of the Supreme Court struck down instant triple talaq as illegal.
Meanwhile, the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) has said that if the Modi government considers it necessary to enact a law in this regard, it should first consult the stakeholders including the AIMPLB.
“You are requested to not pursue the said bill (Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill 2017) and rather withdraw the same. In case your government considers it necessary to enact law in this respect, consultations must be held with the AIMPLB and such Muslim women organisations that are true representatives of Muslim women,” it said in a letter to Prime Minister Modi dated December 25.
