Karnataka polls on May 5; counting on May 8

New Delhi, 20th March: The Karnataka polls will go on in single phase on May 5, the Election Commission announced on Wednesday. Speaking at a press briefing here, Chief Election Commissioner VS Sampath said the counting of votes will be taken up on May 8.

With the announcement of dates, the model code of conduct has come into force with immediate effect. The tenure of the current 224-member Karnataka Assembly is set to expire on June 3.

The announcement of poll dates came after a meeting of top election officials with Union Home Secretary RK Singh on the availability of security forces for the smooth conduct of polls in the southern state.

CEC Sampath and Election Commissioners HS Brahma and SNA Zaidi also held meetings with the Home Secretary along and other officials.

Election officials have already held consultations with state authorities and met various political parties in the state during their visit to Karnataka.

Karnataka is currently ruled by BJP which is struggling ever since former Chief Minister B S Yeddyurappa left the party and formed his own outfit.
