Flash flood in Kedarnath, several persons missing

Dehradoon: Flash flood hit Kedarnath and other area of Uttarakhand in which several persons died and missing in it. The shrine board of 12 jyotirlingas is situated at an altitude of 3593 metres in Rudrapayag district is among the most reveared Hindu pilgrimage sites. This place is visited by lakhs of people every year during Char Dham Yatra. This Char Dham Yatra has been suspended after the rain fury which damage roads and buildings and left over 100 dead in the state. As per reports, 50 bodies are lying in areas adjacent to the shrine even as it is feared that many more bodies are below the debris. About 500 people, including several pilgrims, are said to be missing in the area. The death toll may rise significantly once water recedes and relief teams are able to access the affected areas. A massive loss of life and property is feared. The Kedarnath temple is safe but a portion of shrine compound along with Nandi seems to have washed away. The rescue operation had been started late due to adverse climatic conditions. Multiple teams of national disaster management force, Army and paramilitary forces are working on a war footing to provide aid and help. The major cause of devastation of Kedarnath town is said to be the breaking of the Kedar Dome, a glacier-like body that led to a rupture in the Charbari lake reservoir. The Kedarnath shrine which can be reached either by ponies or through a trek of 14 kilometers from Gauri Kund or by helicopter but because of weather the first two methods are not feasible.
