SC asked EC to frame guidelines to restrict freebies

New Delhi: Supreme Court asked Election Commission to frame guidelines to restrict political parties from committing for freebies to the voters in the manifestos of election on Friday.

A bench of Justice P Satsasivam said that these guidelines would be necessary for maintaining the credibility during the elections. This acme court said that the freebies can influence the people and disturb the level playing field.

The court said that committing for freebies like televisions and laptops was not a corrupt practice under section 123 of the Representation of Peoples Act.

The decision came while dismissing a petition which had sought the promise of free colour TVs by a political party in Tamil Nadu to be declared a corrupt practice.
