Centre is defending Antony over his controversial statement

AK AntonyNew Delhi: Indian Army Chief General Bikram Singh had briefed the Defence Minister AK Antony’s statement this morning. Bikram Singh has visited the Jammu and Kashmir on Wednesday where five Indian soldiers were killed by Pakistani soldiers. Now it seems that government is in defensive position after the controversial statement of AK Antony.

Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Rajeev Shukla told reporters outside Parliament that the Defence Minister made a statement based on the information available to him on the day of the attack itself since there was a lot of pressure on him by the Opposition. Shukla was defending Antony. Parliament was disrupted for a second day on Wednesday, as the Bharatiya Janata Party accused Antony of misleading both houses.

Antony, on Tuesday, said that some 20 heavily-armed terrorists along with men dressed in Pakistan Army uniform ambushed an Indian Army patrol inside Jammu and Kashmir. Five soldiers were killed and one was seriously injured in the attack.

Meanwhile an earlier Army statement placed the blame on the Pakistan Army for the ambush. On Wednesday, top BJP leaders included LK Advani, Rajnath Singh, Sushma Swaraj and Arun Jaitley. Antony, External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid and National Security Advisor Shiv Shankar Menon met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and conveyed that the government had created “a big problem” through Antony’s statement on the killing of five Indian soldiers. The BJP has sharply slammed the government over Antony not blaming the Pakistani Army for killing the Indian soldiers and has demanded an apology from him.
