Andhra floods: Death toll hits 42, CM carry out an aerial survey today

Rains2_20131025Hyderabad: Even as rains continue to wreak havoc in the state, at least 42 people were reported dead in the Andhra floods on Monday. Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy will carry out an aerial survey today and review the rescue and relief operations. Reddy is also expected to visit the affected areas of Prakasam and Guntur districts. Continuous rains have submerged hundreds of villages in water and around 96,000 people have been evacuated so far. Schools will remain closed in Srikakulam today.

Commuting has also been severely affected with roads severely damaged and several trains getting cancelled or diverted. The Chief Minister had directed the officials to provide 10 kg rice to the victims and give them the financial assistance of Rs 3,000. He further said that the victims should be given medical assistance, food, drinking water and other essentials. Standing crops in 7.99 lakh hectares were inundated and 1668 cattle perished due to heavy rains, which also damaged 21,760 houses. The state has already suffered losses to the tune of Rs 1,868 crores, the AP Disaster Management committee has said.
