New Delhi: The Delhi High Court today stayed the Arvind Kejriwal-led government’s plan to grant 50% waiver on power bills.
The court had directed Lt-Governor and the Delhi government to file an affidavit clarifying whether the AAP Cabinet had taken a decision to grant 50% waiver on power bills of those who defaulted on payment as part of AAP’s bijli paani andolan.
The affidavit submitted by the Delhi government in court doesn’t make it clear whether the final decision on waiver had been passed or not. The HC asked the government to file an affidavit clarifying its position on the issue during the next hearing on March 18.
The court was hearing a PIL against the AAP government’s decision to waive electricity bills and close cases against bill defaulters.
The plea had stated that any such waiver would “encourage unlawful behaviour” and would amount to “rewarding breaking of law.
The plea also said the decision was unfair towards law-abiding citizens who had continued to pay “inflated bills.
The PIL also claimed that the decision was “irrational, politically motivated and in violation of Article 14 and Directive Principle of State Policy of the Constitution.
