Govt. request SC to not cancel all coal block allocationsNew Delhi: The central Government had requested to the Supreme Court on Monday to not cancel all coal block allocations which took place in between 1993 to 2010 as there is worst power situation in several parts of India.

Attorney General Mukul Rohatgi said that the power situation in the country is very critical and at least 46 blocks should be spared that are ready to commence production.

He said to the apex court that if these 218 coal blocks are cancelled, then the government will have to go for an immediate auction.

Notify that the apex court had to decide upon the cancellation of 218 coal blocks on Monday which had been allocated by screening committee between 1993 and 2010. These allocations had been termed as illegal by Supreme Court.

The apex court also said that no objective criteria were followed by the screening committee in the allocation of the coal blocks.

A bench headed by Chief Justice RM Lodha also held that “no State Government or public sector undertakings of the State Governments are eligible for mining coal for commercial use”.
