Nifty surges past 8,000 to hit record highMumbai: Continuing their record setting spree, the National Stock Exchange (NSE) Nifty breached the 8,000-mark for the first time ever and BSE Sensex logged a new peak of 26,812.69 in opening trade on Monday on the back of positive economic growth data for the April-June quarter.

The 50-share Nifty crossed the 8,000-level for the first time and surged to trade at a new peak of 8,018.65, up by 64.30 points, or 0.80 per cent. Its previous all-time high was 7,968.25 hit on August 25.

The after-glow of Narendra Modi’s election victory nearly four months ago helped India’s lumbering economy register its fastest growth in two-and-a-half years for the quarter ending in June, according to data on Friday.

The 50-share broader index marked a record high of 8,022.70. Markets were closed on Friday for a holiday. L&T gained 2.8 percent, while ICICI Bank Ltd (ICBK.NS) rose 1.6 percent.
