New Delhi: The Ramlila Maidan here is being spruced up with fresh coats of paint, new plants and repair of its boundary wall ahead of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s rally on Saturday. The BJP-led North Corporation is leaving no stone unturned, literally.
Officials said the walls are being plastered, the stage is getting painted and greenery around the ground is being improved. Security personnel, accompanied by canine units, swept the ground for threats on Monday. Leader of the Opposition in the North Corporation Mukesh Goel said: “This is all an attempt by the BJP leaders to impress Modi.
He added that all preparations would definitely cost more than the rent and cleaning fee paid at the time of booking the venue. A senior officer added that while the daily rent for the massive ground was only Rs.5, 500 and the security deposit Rs.12, 000, the repair work wouldn’t cost much as it was very “basic”.
With the Delhi Assembly elections soon, the rally will be the first in the BJP’s campaign in the Capital this year. In the absence of a chief ministerial candidate, the party is hoping to bank on Modi as its face in the Delhi polls.
Ahead of Delhi elections, Aam Admi Party convener Arvind Kejriwal today asked Prime Minister Narendra Modi to declare statehood as promised. Posting on Twitter, he said, “Tomorrow Modi will address Delhi from Ramlila Maidan. He had promised full statehood to Delhi. Will he announce that tomorrow? Or will BJP do a U-turn on this issue also?
He also asked, “Before polls, BJP announced 30% reduction in electricity rates Delhi eagerly hoping that PM would announce that tomorrow. Using hashtag ‘Delhi asks PM Modi’, Kejriwal asked PM to answer his questions. Modi will adress Delhi from Ramlila ground on January 10.
