Gaya: A middle-aged man and a teenager, who had earlier eloped, were mercilessly beaten and burnt to death allegedly on the orders of a village panchayat in the Gaya district of Bihar. Reports on Wednesday said that the 16-year-old girl and her alleged lover, a 36-year-old man, were allegedly killed after a public hearing attended by hundreds of people.
A 30-year-old man and the girl, 16, were allegedly dragged to a square by 20 of the girl’s relatives and thrashed publicly before being killed. Others in the village allegedly watched and chose not to stop them. No one called the police either; the incident was reported by a neighbouring village.
According to police reports, Jayram Manjhi (36) father of three father of three had developed affair with class nine girl, who was his niece. Jayram used to come to the village frequently to visit his in-laws. There he reportedly met the teenager. The two allegedly ran away three days ago, but were caught by the girls family and brought back to the village on Wednesday morning.
Thereafter a hearing of village panchayat was called to decide on their punishment attended by hundreds of people. Ironically, the girl’s family also attended the public hearing and is believed to have supported the village panchayat’s order.
Jayram’ s wife Shakuntala Devi had informed the police about the incident. The duo were cremated before the police reached the spot. An FIR has also been filed against 15 people, including the girl’s father. The Gaya Police has begun investigation into the matter and has arrested one person
