#Emergency One of #India's darkest period; proud of those who #resisted it: #PMNew Delhi: On the 40th anniversary of the imposition of the Emergency, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday said a vibrant liberal democracy was the key to progress and that everything should be done to strengthen democratic ideals and ethos.

A vibrant liberal democracy is the key to progress. Let us do everything possible to further strengthen our democratic ideals & ethos,” the Prime Minister tweeted this morning. Modi described Emergency as the darkest period in India’s history.

The PM said he is proud of the people who resisted the Emergency and whose efforts ensured that the democratic fabric was preserved. Emergency was a great opportunity to work with a wide spectrum of leaders & organisations fighting for the same goal – return of democracy,” he tweeted further.

He said: “Nobody can forget June 25-26 when the nation was turned into a jail and bound with chains of Emergency for lust of power 40 years back. Forty years later, we want to preserve the dreams under which all citizens prosper under a democratic system.”
