Shameful :Tamil Magazine Kumudam in Trouble, for doing a vulgar story on women’s leggings

Shameful :Tamil Magazine Kumudam in Trouble, for doing a vulgar story on women’s leggingsChennai: A  popular Tamil magazine,Kumudam Reporter, has done a cover story on leggings and stirred a huge controversy in the process. The cover shows the backs of three women with the headline reading, “Are leggings obscene? Young women cross the line.” In no time, social media tweeted its outrage regarding the magazine and this story.

In it’s protest, a group of women journalists, writers and activist in Tamil Nadu are to release a statement condemning Kumudam for the article and protesting against it. The women who are featured on the cover photo of the story even don’t know about this. The pictures must have taken without their knowldege.

Many of the readers and activists tweeted about the magazine’s story expressing their ire against it. Here are some of the tweets made by people. Kumudam used to be a brilliant magazine. Sadly now they’re literally the pits! Terrible cover story!”

It was accompanied by several photographs of women on the road and riding pillion, all cropped suggestively to further drive in the message that leggings were provocative. Soon after the weekly hit the news stands, a controversy erupted over the moralistic tone of the article, with scores, especially the youth — but not restricted to women alone — coming out with scathing criticisms.

The article was variously described as misogynistic and regressive, and the magazine was asked to apologise for running it. The story blamed women for wearing “obscene clothes” and said men stare at them because they wear skin tight clothes.

What a sexist, violating post created by Kumudham. Disgrace!” “Sick. Shameful journalism. @Kumudam_Com you need to apologize for this photo.”
