30-year-old Delhi ACP shoots self, upset wife attempts suicide: policeNew Delhi: A 30-year-old assistant commissioner of police (ACP), posted with the Delhi Police’s Special Cell, allegedly shot himself with his service revolver on Monday night. Upset over his death, his wife allegedly attempted suicide minutes later by jumping off the balcony of their fourth floor residence in Noida Sector 100. “This is a shocking incident and a huge loss for the force. The Noida Police is trying to ascertain the reason behind the incident,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police P S Kushwaha.

The incident took place at 9.40 pm on Monday at Lotus Boulevard Apartments, where ACP Amit Singh, a 2008-batch DANIPS (Delhi, Andaman and Nicobar Islands Police Service) officer, lived with his wife Sarita and their 18-month-old daughter, said the police. Sarita is in a critical condition, said the police, adding that they are trying to ascertain the reason behind Singh’s suicide and his wife’s attempted suicide.

According to sources, the couple had a verbal argument minutes before the incident, after which Singh locked himself inside one of the rooms and shot himself in the temple. Sarita heard the sound of the shot and rushed downstairs to call for help, said the sources. The apartment’s security guard and other neighbours rushed upstairs and broke open the door of the room. They found Singh’s body inside, added the sources.

When she saw her husband’s body, Sarita grabbed Singh’s gun and tried to shoot herself, but one of her neighbours snatched the gun away, said sources. She then rushed to the balcony and before any of her neighbours could stop her, she jumped off, said sources.

Singh, who hails from Bihar, joined the force in 2008. He was transferred to the Special Cell, the Delhi Police’s elite anti-terror unit, in 2014. The team in Special Cell, led by Singh, had managed to nab several offenders in Southwest Delhi and Outer Delhi, said sources.

The ACP had earlier been in the news in October 2014, when he was brutally beaten up by three people, including a woman, in a road rage incident near Nizamuddin police station. Singh had to be hospitalized for nearly a month to recuperate after the incident, said sources. Amit and Sarita had been married for five years.
