New Delhi: The Union Home Ministry has finally decided to crack the whip against Islamic preacher Zakir Naik for allegedly carrying out “subversive activities” in the country, a media report said on Thursday.
The ministry is reportedly contemplating to declare Naik’s Islamic Research Foundation (IRF) an “unlawful association”.
Naik’s speeches have also come under the ministry’s scanner, which is of the view that his speeches were “highly inflammatory”.
According to Times Now, the ministry has, meanwhile, referred its proposal to the Law Commission before it takes a final call on the matter.
The government will take action against IRF under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act after the commission gives its views on the matter, the report claimed.
It has been alleged that the seven Bangladeshi terrorists who brutally hacked innocents in a Dhaka café were two young men who followed the controversial Mumbai-based preacher.
Naik has often courted controversy over his discourses where he derides other religions while highlighting the virtues of Islam.
50-year-old, a doctor, had refused to describe Osama bin Laden as a terrorist. The United Kingdom, Malaysia and Canada have banned him from entering their territory.
