Congress Lok Sabha MP from Kanyakumari H Vasanthakumar died of Covid-19 infection on Friday.Chennai:  Congress Lok Sabha MP from Kanyakumari in Tamil Nadu, Mr H Vasanthakumar died of Covid-19 on Friday evening in Chennai. He had been undergoing treatment at a Chennai Apollo hospital since August 10 and his condition had turned critical over the last week.
 
Mr HariKrishnan Vasanthakumar had tested positive for coronavirus earlier and was admitted at Chennai’s Apollo Hospital since August 10. He had been in a critical condition after contracting pneumonia and was on ventilator support. Chennai Apollo Hospitals in a statement later said the MP H Vasanthakumar was treated in a critical care unit for severe Covid pneumonia.
 
“Despite all active medical measures, his condition deteriorated gradually due to Covid 19 complications and he passed away today,” the Chennai Apolo hospital said.
 
He Was Born on April 14, 1950, Mr  Vasanthakumar Harikrishna Perumal is the brother of Tamil Nadu Congress veteran and noted Tamil litterateur Kumari Ananthan.
 
The 70-year-old Congress Lok Sabha  MP represented the Kanyakumari constituency in Lok Sabha. He was also the working president of the Tamil Nadu Congress Committee.
 
Mr HariKrishnan Vasanthakumar was a biggest social worker of Tamil nadu, he was helping poor families and needy person in his assembly constituency with parliamentary constituency. 
 
H Vasanthakumar was the founder and chairman of Vasanth & Co, the largest retail home appliance chain in Tamil Nadu. He was also the founder and managing director of the Tamil satellite TV channel Vasanth TV.
 
First-time MP after winning the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, H Vasanthakumar had previously served two times as the Nanguneri MLA in the Tamil Nadu assembly from 2006-2011 and 2016-2019.
 
In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, he defeated BJP leader Pon Radhakrishnan by a big margin of 2.59 lakh votes.
 
Mr H Vasanthakumar is survived by his wife, two sons and a daughter.
 
Leader’s Condole H VASANTHAKUMAR’S DEATH
 
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister K Palaniswami, Telangana governor Tamilisai Soundararajan, who is Vasanthakumar’s niece, Congress party leaders Rahul Gandhi, P Chidambaram and DMK president MK Stalin were among those who condoled the death.
 
Condoling Vasanthakumar’s death, PM Modi tweeted, “Saddened by the demise of Lok Sabha MP Shri H. Vasanthakumar Ji. His strides in business and social service efforts were noteworthy. During my interactions with him, I always saw his passion towards Tamil Nadu’s progress. Condolences to his family and supporters. Om Shanti.”
 
Tamilnadu CM  Expressing grief, K  Palaniswami said, “Vasanthakumar who started his career as a salesman came up in life through his hard work. He did excellent service for the educational and economic growth of the poor and earned the love of the people in his public life.”
 
Congress party tweeted : “We are deeply saddened by the untimely demise of Shri H. Vasanthakumar. A staunch Congressman, true leader of the people and beloved MP. He will be sorely missed by all members of the Congress party and his followers. Our prayers are with his family in this time of grief,” the Congress said in a statement.
 
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi said the untimely demise of H Vasanthakumar came as a “shock”. “The news of Kanyakumari MP, Shri H Vasanthakumar’s untimely demise due to Covid-19 has come as a shock. His commitment to the Congress ideology of serving the people will remain in our hearts forever. Heartfelt condolences to his friends and family members,” he wrote.
 
Expressing grief over the Congress MP’s death, Puducherry Chief Minister V Narayansamy said in a condolence message that “In the passing away of Vasanthakumar, the TNCC has lost a great and dedicated leader.”
 
Recalling his close association with the late Vasanthakumar, Narayanasamy said he was a hard-working entrepreneur who contributed a lot to the Congress.
