BJP candidate list 2026: Party releases first list for Tamil Nadu election; Annamalai omitted

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) launched its campaign for the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections on Friday by announcing the names of its first batch of candidates. After considerable discussions within the BJP’s New Delhi office, the candidate list includes some well-known names, but has also left out some notable candidates.

Missing K. Annamalai from the candidate list: Deadlock expected over Coimbatore north

K. Annamalai, a former Indian Police Service officer and a significant BJP leader in Tamil Nadu, was widely assumed to be the face of the BJP’s 2026 campaign. He is currently absent from the first round of candidates.

Speculation about the reason for Annamalai’s absence centers on a potential impasse over the Coimbatore North constituency. Annamalai was expected to be the BJP’s candidate for Coimbatore North, but the party has opted to renominate Vanathi Srinivasan for that seat, signalling turbulence within the party.

Two stars to head up the campaigns: L. Murugan and Tamilisai Soundararajan

The BJP is betting on its two biggest stars to run its campaign in the most contested areas of Tamil Nadu.
